Would it be better to move my furnace from attic to basement or…?
add two ventless gas fire place inserts to my existing two woodburning fireplaces(one is on the first floor the other is in basement). I am looking for cost effectiveness and overall resale. The main reason I am interested is my furnace is melting snow on the roof over it. All the ducts are sealed but they must not be insulated enough for the region. Please help
Depending on the type of climate it may be beneficial to move your heating source to the basement. What you are experiencing is heat rising, possible from the uninsulated/under-insulated parts of duct or, the house may be losing heat. It is near impossible to add duct work to a finished basement. my recommendation is hire a company to insulate your attic duct work, in some areas there are huge rebates for insulating duct work to R-6 or better rating. second, add any type of fireplace to your house, i recommend the basement because it is probably the coldest place in the house. Adding a fireplace will increase your retail price $3-5K. you don’t even have to do a full on insert, you can put a vent free gas log in your existing fireplace and close the damper. you can pick one up for fairly cheap. recommend Monessen TPB24NVC burner with CTCL24 log.
